Meet the Team

About Us

In the early days of the pandemic, Scott Johnson and Jill Mayo, managing partners at Aloha Growers, a Maui-based creative agency, created the concept and brand of Growers Magazine after being inspired by Permaculture Now’s, Jenny Pell. Documenting Jenny while she made food islands all over the island had inspired a hope in them for a more resilient future. Their goal became to share the stories of growers. Production and filming had started when Aloha Growers took a sudden and unexpected turn into artist management. The project was put on hold while hopes remained that they would find the right team to work with on the magazine.

In July 2023, Scott and Jill reconnected with Jenny which gave them the opportunity to introduce her to Growers Magazine and partner with them on publishing the online platform. It was a natural fit for Scott and Jill as it was Jenny who inspired them to create the magazine. For Jenny this was familar territory as she had years of permaculture experience and was also raised by a father who was a foreign correspondent for a large news organization. Jenny graduated from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and since then, she has been all over the world planting thousands of trees. In 2005, she founded Permaculture Now where she has designed and inspired small and large-scale permaculture landscapes for all different types of property owners and organizations.

With a Publisher (Jenny Pell), Senior Editor (Jill Mayo), and Editor (Scott Johnson) for Growers Magazine, they turned to Zelie Duvauchelle from Na Mea Pono Productions to be part of the project and act as the “Ike Kupuna” bringing the wisdom and experience of a lifetime of exploration in the healing arts. Zelie will join the editorial team and act as Growers Magazine’s Editor at Large.
